Last updated June 1, 2002 EXCERPT from the May 3, 1983 Bloomington Times: "To PCB or not to PCB: A round up of local activists" By Joe Hadley . . . Unlike 'People United Against PCBs' (PUAPCBs) or 'Westinghouse is Satan Personified' (WISP), the 'Wind Horse Alliance' (WHA) is less overtly political. The seven member group, named after the Wind Horse Emporium restaurant/coffee shop where they originally came together, prefers, in the words of co-founder Mike (LAST NAME REDACTED) "just ask WHA?," a combination he says of "why? and what?" Indeed, the seven founders ask both why and what in all their endeavors. They come from vastly different backgrounds, from Primatology to Sociology to Mike's status as an "Independent Scholar." Bringing those disciplines together gives the group, says co-founder James (LAST NAME REDACTED), "a chorus of perspectives." The group recognizes that most alliances or groups tend to be more like-minded, but, says Mike "We will need a diversity of points of view reaching consensus, if we're going to solve the very real problems of pollution, contamination, global warming, etc." WHA's mission statement is one of sending out an alarm for the planet, overall, including issues of nuclear weapons and certain population explosion. They believe their multi-discipline backgrounds serve them well in their efforts to, says Mitsu (LAST NAME REDACTED), who studies plant genetics and photosynthesis at IU, "educate and entertain - we call it edutain!" The group can be reached at 334-2835. |
